LITHUANIAN ACHIEVEMENTS IN GEOGRAPHICAL NAMING MANAGEMENT WERE PRESENTED IN THE UNITED NATIONS CONFERENCE
Representatives of the National Land Service (NLS) participated in the 20th session of the Expert Group on Geographical Names of the Baltic Section of the United Nations (UN), held in Riga on 24 and 26 September 2019.
The session was attended by experts from Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Russia.
During the session, participants discussed issues such as standardization of National Geographic Names, copyright, legal regulation, discussions on the development and development prospects of geographic names, geographic maps, the preservation of place names as cultural and historical heritage. The participants of the conference also heard the national reports of the countries.
During the event, 21 reports were read on geographical name topics. A cartographic exhibition, where representatives of the countries presented their maps, place-names and other cartographic works was also displayed at the session.
At the UN event the representatives of the National Land Service presented their work on geographical names in Lithuania. Great interest in the session was drawn to the information that, in the framework of the resolution of 14 June 2018 of the Republic of Lithuania Seimas, the 2019 year was announced as year of geographical Names. On 16 January 2019, the Government of the Republic of Lithuania adopted a plan for development of the name mentioning plan.
The 21st session of the Expert Group on Geographical Names of the UN Baltic section is scheduled to be organized in Autumn 2020 in Tallinn.
